Ponds in Santa Barbara are numerous and range in size, shape, theme and style. Construction methods and materials vary as well. Concrete is our recommended choice when it comes to pond longevity.
Waterproofing a pond is crucial and if concrete is the selected pond building material, then you have a wide range of choices. Adding a concrete waterproofing admixture such as Xypex (a hydrophilic crystalline admixture), to the concrete is popular among pool builders. I also like to use a penetrating, non-toxic, concrete hardening type of sealer such as Aquron or Sinak first before applying a waterproof coating to the concrete.
Ponds are typically built for a specific purpose such as for fish, water gardens, water storage or purely decorative in nature.
I highly recommend setting up a system to circulate and filter the water of any pond construction.
